REPORT OF THE ONE DAY WORKSHOP
TEACHING IN the 21ST CENTURY -
INTEGRATING TECHNIQUES IN LEARNING SPACES
ON 19th OCTOBER 2019
St. Joseph’s College for Women in association with U.S. Consulate General Hyderabad and Regional English Language Office, U.S. Embassy New Delhi has organized a One Day Workshop on "Teaching in the 21st Century: Integrating Techniques into Learning Spaces" for High School teachers on 19th October 2019 timings morning 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The workshop was open to teachers in the age group of 25 to 45 which was held at the College Campus in Convent Junction, where nearly 30 school teachers participated in the workshop.    The resource person for the workshop was Ms.Vicki A. Hale, English Language Fellow sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The day began with the Inaugural Session at 9:00 AM welcome address by Ms. Ramani Dhanaraj Head Dept of Office Management followed by the lightening of the lamp invoking God’s blessings.
The President of the session Dr. Sr. Shyji, the dynamic Principal of St. Joesph’s College for Women (A), Visakhapatnam addressed the gathering reminding of the Who, What & How of an effective teacher:
  • A teacher must be well equipped
  • An effective teacher knows that learning is the latest technology
  • A teacher needs to adjust to the changes
  • Adapt ways and methods to present an interesting classroom atmosphere to the students.

The Rationale of the workshop was read by Dr. T. Bhaskara Sudha Coordinator for the workshop which stated that teachers must join together under the four ‘C’ of 21st Century Education - Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, & Critical Thinking, which are the basic skills a student needs.

Session -I with an Ice -Breaker called "Speed Networking"
Ms. Vicki started this session which enhanced a lot of interaction among the participants. Group discussions & Think-Pair-Share were more enriching to the participants. To highlight a few:
  • Peak Learning Experiences
  • Feedback on Future World
  • Skills & New Learning
Session-II: Learning & Innovative Skills mainly the 4 ‘C’
  • Curiosity
  • Confidence
  • Caring
  • Courage

The group sharing at this point was rather interesting as the participants exhibit their various emotions. An exposure to Learning & Innovation Skills led to Critical thinking & Problem Solving, Communication & Collaboration, Creativity & Innovation. Augusto Boal, the dramatist had stated 3 fundamental principles:-

1. To help the spectators become a protagonist of the dramatic action.

2. Apply those actions to real life.

3. Critical thinking involves -thinking -analysis and then elaborating.

Session-III: Career & Life Skills
This session paved way for sharing the education of girl child. We are indeed proud to say that the St. Joseph’s College for Women (A) truly care for women and uphold their dignity and benevolence. The session continued on with the Role Play of a Teacher, which enabled the participants to come out with a very effective plan of action.
To conclude with a gentle note of reminder to each one of us-
"If the child can’t learn the way we teach then we need to teach the way she/he can learn".
The workshop came to an end at 4:00 PM with the distribution of certificates to the participants.
