DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Established in 1958, the Department of English is one of the oldest and largest departments of the College, known for excellence in teaching English Language and Literature. It offers programs from Intermediate to Postgraduate levels, staying updated with new literary trends while maintaining traditional strengths. The Department pioneered streaming in General English in 1987 to support students from diverse language backgrounds. Beyond classroom teaching, it engages students through lectures, film reviews, seminars, and its literary club, ‘LitSpell,’ launched in 2015. Courses include General English, Communication & Soft Skills, B.A. and M.A. in English Language and Literature, and skill-based programs like English for Employability, Effective Communication Skills. The Department aims to equip students with strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills for careers in teaching, writing, journalism, and related fields.
VISION
The Department of English Language and Literature seeks to foster the intellectual development of its majors by encouraging the study of literature and writing - whether, technical or other professional writing along with the needs of general education diversity, and global perspectives with those of the majors.
MISSION
The overall mission of the English Department is to promote literacy--specifically the ability to read, write, and think critically and strengthens the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present.
